A lot of people are quite unhappy with their weight. Being either too fat or too skinny is hardly ever a good thing. But how do you know when you are reaching the 'danger zone'? Neither one of these means your living a unhealthy live. What DOES tell you a lot about the healthiness of your weight is you BMI.

BMI stands for body mass index. By calculating you BMI you will get a beter perception of the weight categorie your body is in. A healthy BMI doesn't mean you have the body of a super model, but it does mean you are treating your body the (healthy) way it deserves.

Calculating formula

How can you calculate your own BMI you might wonder? Thats quite simple. There are two formula's you can use, depending on the kind of measurements you are used to:
Imperial (US) methode:
weight in pounds x 703
height in inches

Easily said, you have to multiply your weight to 703 before you divide it to you you height in inches. The European measurement is even simpler:
Metric method:
weight in kilograms
height in meters

There are a few categories your body can fit in. To make it simple, we have written them out:

BMI < 18,5 : under weight
BMI 18,5 - 24,9 : normal weight
BMI 25 - 29,9: over weight
BMI 30 + : obese

Simple Guideline

Calculating your BMI can be a simple guideline you can use . Of course there are certain exceptions to this rule, like pregnant women, bodybuilders or people with an illness wont get much information out of there BMI. These measurements are as well calculated for adults. For children there a different ways of measuring the BMI, by mainly comparing their lengt and weight to other children their age.
